Analyzing the Characters of Waterland  In "Waterland" Swift weaves a magical yet haunting tale of ordinary characters who live through they’re own struggles and problems unadorned by the complexity of world history yet forever revolving around the isolated and mysterious Fenns. His characters are a formidable mix of the stereotyped and the unordinary as he shows us how even the most common person can lead the strangest and most complex life and display a vast range of opposed emotions and thoughts.  "Waterland" is a profound study of human nature that not only displays the intricacies of people but also analyses the men and woman that live among us and for which each of us can find a name. Thus we all know an Ernest Atkinson, a bourgeois born into wealth who finds a meaning in life in the texts of Marx which push him to oppose the life that has been imposed on him thus angering his town and family. Ernest is the most interesting character in that he shows how geniuses and men with unorthodox ideas are often called rebels and segregated from the rest of society in their uniqueness and intensity. Mary in "Waterland" leads a disturbingly bizarre life that ends with her kidnapping a baby; the transformation of her personality following the abortion and her increasing mental instability shows the fragility of the human mind. Her character as that of Ernest is astoundingly realistic and thus one of the most effective characters in the novel. One of the most compelling characteristics of Swift's writing is his mysterious characters, he only describes people at the most important and relevant part of their lives and the rest is left to the readers imagination. He also surprises the reader by withholding vital information about a character for a couple chapters than suddenly revealing it thus changing the reader's perspective completely. This permits him to build up formidably complex minds in very short periods of time as he only describes what is striking and always brings new dimensions to old characters thus he shows what Mary was like when she was a "little Madonna" and abruptly changes our whole perspective of her when we learn of her adventures thus shedding the first layer of mystery and giving the reader something new to reflect on. Swift also for some of the characters gives us information at the very the beginning of "Waterland" and it takes the whole novel for us to learn how that person died (in the case of Dic k) or became insane (in the case of Mary).

Challenges that working women face today Essay
Introduction In today’s culture where individualism is emphasized and especially that women are encouraged to assume equal roles as men would normally take, two or three decades ago, it is very difficult to see eye to eye with how women are during biblical times. â€Å"Girl power†or women empowerment is the rule of the day for women nowadays. Although, of course, all women as all men have the right to lead in the sense that they have the same intrinsic capacity to influence, the role of leadership has been blown out of proportion by feminist groups as they apply it to women. The result of this over blown leadership role of women has been the constant battle between members of opposite sexes in many significant areas within society. It has affected the homes, government and non-government institutions, down to the smallest entity that has within its membership men and women. The Challenges Today, despite the liberty afforded to women since their right to suffrage had been granted, myriads of problems assails them as they exercise many of their freedoms. These include sexual harassment and abuse, balancing family life and, still being debated to a degree is the issue on an equitable salary or pay. Generally, the women today have double jobs not to mention the close attention they pay towards their children’s schooling. This is usually true in urbanized and highly educated centers in the mainland USA. Despite these changes of traditional roles of women in the cities, there are yet rural areas where women assume roles that are still traditional. Women in these areas are still known to be subservient to their men; oftentimes abuses are the rule not the exception. Abuses come in the form of incest, rape, lure of prostitution, cybernet prostitution, abortion, domestic violence, sex tourism, and mail order brides among others. However, without exception, more less educated women are abused than their more educated counterparts who also have more access to social services. In other words, the abuses mentioned characterized women, though the incidence and degree are comparatively higher in the less educated and misplaced/marginalized areas (Malveuax et al., 2002). ~ Salary Equity Despite the provision by law that there should be equal remuneration standards for men and women, many firms and workplaces continue to abuse women of this right (Equal Employment Opportunity Act). This law precisely was originally intended for women to receive equal pay and be protected against anomalous employers who make whimsical decisions regarding their women employees. It provides against employers who may lower wages from either sex or labor organizations that will attempt to influence employers against employees’ wages (Taber, 2008). The question is how prevalent is the discrimination or abuse on employee salaries? Basically, most occupations still show discrepancy with women versus men wages, although various explanations are put forth. However the factors may be explained, the fact still remains that women lose around 20 to 30 percent to that of men’s income (77cents to one dollar for men) as reported by The Washington Post (2007 July). ~Balancing Work and family (Work-Life Initiatives) Work-life initiatives are strategies implemented by firms to reduce turnover and increase productivity and overall firm performance. Studies were made to examine the influence and effects of work-life initiatives on employees and the organization in general. Workplace diversity which incorporates the concepts of work-life initiatives does indicate that it is inevitable that when a company introduces work-life initiatives, there is a resulting increase in diversity. Substantial evidence point to the effectiveness of workplace diversity hence, many institutions encourage and promote this in their particular milieu (http://www.cmdronline.com/workshops.htm). It is inevitable that juggling work and family life will be one of a person’s demanding experiences. The rationale for having a job is not only to have a livelihood, achieve personal satisfaction in the expression of his abilities and trainings, and receive his remuneration and perks on the side. Preparation for family stability to be able to provide and thus create an atmosphere of care, for bachelors/maidens, is also the foremost and logical reason for having a job. However, the thin thread that separates between the two polarities becomes blurred, and there lies the tension that pulls a person in different directions. The Center for Mediation and Dispute Resolution opens its website with the following quote: â€Å"Our life is one giant balancing act (http://www.cmdronline.com/workshops.htm).†Perhaps, no person will ever disagree with that statement. The goal then is to know how to do the balancing act, to gain competencies in achieving a rewarding, flourishing kind of life that holds work in one hand, while maintaining a well-nurtured and healthy family on the other hand. ~Sex Harassment What is perhaps most important to women’s well-being is their security against abuse of any form from employers, fellow employees and other people as they conduct their day-to-day affairs. Sex harassment is defined by the Women’s Justice Network as â€Å"Sexual harassment is any unwelcome sexual advance, request for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Whether sexual harassment is from a supervisor, co-workers or customers, it is an attempt to assert power over another person. The harassment may take place in your work setting, outside of your work setting, in your home, while traveling on business or at business functions†(20002). Conclusion While at the moment, the common cry of women is equality to both genders as it is reflected in women’s roles in the family, in public places, and the obliteration of the stereotyped designation of females in past decades which until now has its bearing in the minds of the general public the consequent outcome of this campaign is prevalent in almost every area where function is concerned. In the late 1960s, women’s movement began to blossom. It was stirred by the then sentiment of repulsion to the tasks being typecasted among women. Women’s movement of the 60s aimed to question the menial duties relegated to women such as getting married, becoming a housewife and afterwards attending to household chores (including raising children), and when outside opportunity comes for them to work, they’re consigned to answering phones, photocopying, etc (Encarta, 2006). The scenery has been changed and is no longer the same as in the past 30 or 40 years. The typical woman today is one that is among the working class – no longer confined to house premises, but working and providing as much as her male counterparts. She can be the manager or an executive of an established firm where most of the male employees are under her command. Equality in roles has now been achieved. Whereas this status and depiction of women in itself is not outright negative, the undercurrent force that it has created is the programming of the minds of today’s women to be resistant to the biblical description of their role as they are teamed with men. Instead of seeing male and female partnership as complimentary to both sexes, the danger of too much emphasis on equality especially when it is defined merely in domestic and public functions is the threat that masculinity poses to womanhood. It is good for women to fight for their basic equal rights with men as members of this global community, but if it results in certain imbalances because the aim has become the dethronement of the opposite gender, then the battle for equality has now turned into fight for superiority of the female sex. Summit Of Greatness
It was December 2, 1804, with over 400 musicians and singers performing. The world famous cathederal, Notre Dame, was filled. All eyes were set upon Napoleon Bonaparte. This Corsican native slowly ascended the steps to the alter alone, siezing the crown with his own hands. He held it aloft and brought it to rest on his head. Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned Emperor of France that day. Napoleon was an everday guy. He was a 5? 2? lieutenant who was later ranked a general. He married Josephine DeVorne. At first, Napoleon wasn’t very liked amongst certain parts of Europe. Mothers would say to their kids at night to make them sleep a little nightmare raising lullaby†¦ †Baby baby, naughty baby, hush you scwaling thing i say, hush your scwaling or it may be Bonepart that pass this way. †Napoleon was nothing more then an average Corsican man with a cleaver mind. Working was a passion for Napoleon. In 1805, Napoleon planned to cross the English channel. Much like most other conquerors in Eurpope’s land Napoleon had one goal in mind, to conquer all of Europe. As he crossed the channel to invade Great Britain, with 2,000 ships, and 200,000 soldiers, he soon met victory. With that in mind, Russia and Austria wouldn’t allow Napoleon to roam with triumph. Soon after the Grand Army was put to the test against the French. The Russian army was known as the strongest and most feared around. Russia and Austria’s plan to win was by outnumbering Napoleon 2:1. France was looking pretty weak and had no chance of defeating the Russian’s and Austrian’s. But Napoleon saw the flaw in this. The Austrians and Russians were planning to meet half way. Their armies were scattered. So, Napoleon figured if if he was to beat the one army before the two armies linked up,then his men would’ve still stood a chance. Napoleon did just so. He took General Mac (Austria’s general) by surprised and conquered them leaving them forced surrendor. 27,000 men surrendered. Mac lost almost half his army. †I didn’t intend to fight any but England, until your master provoked me†said Napoleon. Nothing stood now between Napoleon and Vienna. In 8 days, Napoleon destroyed Austria’s army by marching, (200,000 marching men, marched 500 miles in 40 days-defeated Austria’s army). On November first Napoleon lead his army into Vienna, the capitol of Austria. The emperor was the first to fleed. Leaving behind his palace and gardens free for the enemy. Bonaparte triumphed alongthe streets. Many then stopped worshipping Napoleon, such as Ludwig Beethoven. On October 21, British admiral Nelson destroyed Napoleon’s army, and took along his own life. Napoleon no longer had the Grand army. French stopped challangeing the British army. It was December of 1805, when Napoleon was faced with an even greater challenge. He was now 1,000 miles from Paris, and was in the center of Europe. With enemies from all angles, Europes land was a great trap to Napoleon’s men. With the knowledge that the Russian’s has once again united with the Austrian’s in November, this time with 90,000 allies put together against France’s 75,000 men, Napoleon had one of two choices. He could’ve either gone back or to move along foward. Bonaparte would’ve NEVER moved back. So, now Napoleon was to face Alexander I, the emperor of Russia. Alexander I(28 years of age) was very jealous of Napoleon. He believed that it was his destiny to triumph over Napoleon. The war against the Russian’s seemed impossible. But leave it up to Napoleon, he was a thinker. He had a plan to encourage the enemy to think he was scared. He wanted to lead the enemy to the battle field of Australit, by making them think Napoleon was weaker then he really was. Once again, Napoleon succeeded. The Russian’s came to battle by hitting Napoleon on the right (the weaker end) first. Bonaparte wanted them to do exactly that. The Russian’s fed right into his plan! Napoleon had a secret for the Russian’s. He had previously set up 2 divisons within 70 miles in 2 days to attack the Russian’s. The attack caught the enemy by surprise and yet gave Napoleon another victory. Napoleon was sort of an artist he planned each battle as if the next move would perfect the whole piece of art, the end of the battle. Napoleon being the whole hearted Corsican man he was. He never let the power get to his head. Over a duration of time Bonaparte’s name was being spread all throughtout Europe. He still managed to write letter’s to his wife and he even elected each of his siblings to an office. His brother Joseph to be the king of Naples, Jerome the king of West Falia, Louis the king of Holand. His sister Caroline to be a Queen, pauline a princess, and Alicia a Dutchess. Trough all the battles and victory Napoleon gained much popularity in no time. Yet, he remained a mother’s boy. He loved his mother and made her Madame Mayor. Josephine and Napoleon were made for eachother. Though, both of them had their own quirrels. Josephine hated all the mistresses Napoleon had. Napoleon hated the habits that Josephine had with spending money. Josephine knew that one day no matter how strong her love was for Napoleon, he would’ve had to divorce her. The day came on November 30, 1809.

DATED 09/01/2013 PRESS RELEASE                                                                CENTRAL DISTRICT GANG OF INTERSTATE CHEATS INVOLVED IN INTERNET BANKING FRAUD BUSTED : FOUR ARRESTED With the arrest of (1) Ajay Kumar Mishra, aged about 45 years s/o Parmeshwar Mishra r/o WZ-823, Palam, Village, Delhi, permanent address Add:- VPO& PS- Jainagar, Madhubani (Bihar), (2) Binay Kumar, aged about 35 years s/o Harish Chand r/o A-166, Devali road, Khanpur, Delhi,     permanent address VPO- Kaitpwar, PS –Sakatpur, Darbhanga (Bihar), (3) Ravi Shankar Pandey, aged about 45 years r/o A-63, near Rama Public School, New Gopal Nagar Extn.Najafgarh, Delhi and (4) Jitender Kumar, aged about 40 years s/o S. R. Suman r/o 38/11, A Block, Amrit Vihar, Burari, Delhi, Central Distric t has busted a cheating racket which had cheated several businessmen by cracking the passwords of their bank Accounts and subsequently transferring huge amounts through internet transactions and RTGS transfer in various Accounts and by subsequently withdrawing the amount from these accounts located in different parts of the country. INCIDENT On 03-01-13, one Sh.Ravi Gupta, owner of a Metal Firm having his office in the area of P. S. Pahar Ganj gave a complaint that Rs. fifteen lakhs have been transferred from his Account illegally through Electronic Transferring System. On this, a case vide FIR No. 02/13 u/s 420 IPC was registered at P. S. Pahar Ganj and the investigation was taken up. TEAM A team comprising of Inspr. Suresh Kaushik, SHO/Pahar Ganj, SI Vinay Kumar, SI Dharmender Kumar, HC Satpal and Ct. Chand Ram was constituted under the supervision of Sh.Anil Kapoor, ACP/Pahar Ganj /Central Districts to apprehend the culprits. INVESTIGATION During the course of investigation, it was revealed that the money had been transferred from the account of the complainant to different Accounts of Delhi, Lucknow and Agra. It was further revealed that Rs. seven lakhs had already been withdrawn from ICICI Bank Green Park Branch where a total of Rs. ten lakhs were transferred. Sources were deployed to apprehend the accused persons as it was suspected that they would approach the bank to withdraw the remaining amount.On 04-01-2013, on the basis of secret information, accused Jitender Kumar and Binay Kumar Mishra were apprehended by the police team from ICICI Bank Green Park Branch, Delhi when they were trying to withdraw the remaining amount cheated from the account of accused Jitender Kumar. During the interrogation, it was revealed that the accused are the members of an interstate gang, who were operating in Delhi. The accused persons used to take instructions from their accomplices namely Ajay Mishra and Ravi Shanker Pandey.It was further revealed that accused J itender Kumar and Binay Kumar Mishra were assigned the task to arrange for operational Accounts of different persons in different Banks all over India from where money could be transferred and the same could be withdrawn immediately even before the victim came to know about the illegal transaction from his Account. At the instance of accused Jitender Kumar and Binay Kumar Mishra, accused Ajay Kumar and Ravi Shanker Pandey were apprehended by the police team from Dwarka and Najafgarh respectively. Ajay Kumar and Ravi Shanker Pandey are the operational members of the gang.At the instance of accused Jitender Kumar and Binay Kumar Mishra, Rs. 30,000/- cash has been recovered and the Bank Account where cheated money more than Rs. four lakhs had been deposited has been frozen. Further investigation / interrogation is in progress. MODUS OPERANDI The members of the gang have thorough knowledge and understanding of Internet Banking. They used to hack the computers of different companies havi ng their current Accounts in Multi National Banks. Once they used to get the user name and password of Account through hacking, they used to track the major transaction of the victim.As soon as the accused persons used to have a substantial amount in that Account, they used to approach the service provider of the Mobile Company of the victim to get a duplicate SIM so that the victim may not get the ALERTS from the Banks of those particular transactions. The members of the gang then used the user name and password of the Account to get the money transferred to a particular Account and thereafter other members of the gang used to start working and withdrew the money through cheque, through ATM or would transfer the money in different Account in different parts of the country.The accused persons used to siphon off money only from the Accounts in Multi National Banks as the transfer and withdrawal was comparatively fast in these Banks. Weapon of offence i. e. knife, mobile phone and shoes of the deceased, and motorcycle used in commission of crime have been recovered. GIST OF CASE On 06/01/13 a PCR call was received vide DD No. 60B at 10. 34 PM at PS Bindapur regarding an unclaimed suitcase lying in D- Block, Phase-I, J J Colony, Dwarka Sec- 3. I. O.S I Ashok Kumar along with staff reached at the spot where foul smell was emanating from the Suitcase which was wrapped in a quilt. Finding the matter suspicious SHO/Bindapur and crime team were called at the spot and opened the suitcase in which a male dead body aged about 30-35 years was found bundled. On inspection throat was found slit with a sharp edge weapon and a polythene was found tied around the neck. The corpse was shown to the number of passerby and neighbourers but despite best efforts the identity of the dead body couldn’t be established. Bereft of any alternative a case of murder vide FIR No. 0/13 u/s 302/201 IPC PS Bindapur was registered on DD No. 60B and investigation was taken up in right earnest. BREAKTHROUGH At the outset, to establish the identity of the deceased was the challenge before the police. Message in the context of details and descriptions of unknown dead body was flashed. Crack teams were formed and were dispatched to the adjacent Police Station s. During this exercise, a team led by SI Ashok came to know that a person is missing from the area of Mohan Garden, Uttam Nagar. The information was further developed and photograph of the deceased was shown to the family members i. . elder brother of deceased. Finally the hard work bore fruits and the identity of the deceased was established as Inder s/o Rajvir Singh r/o L- 2/C- 49, Mohan Garden, Uttam Nagar. After establishing the identity of the deceased, Police launched a massive manhunt to trace the culprits. Local enquiries were made by the Police to extract clues about the last seen of the deceased. Sensing the gravity of the case a special team comprising Inspr. Rajvir Singh Lamba SHO/Bindapur, Inspr. Subhash Chand Inspr. /Investigation Bindapur, SI Ashok Kumar, H. Ct. Rohtash, Ct. Dinesh under the supervision of Sh.M. S Dabas, ACP/Dabri was constituted. The team had a detailed investigation plan and started to pursue the available leads. The team did survey the areas a djoining the scence of crime at about the same time the following night to simulate and recreate the incident. During this exercise, the police team managed to unearth some vital clues. It was transpired that the deceased had illicit relation with one lady. The team got retrieved and analysed the CDR of the deceased and suspect lady. The analyses depicted that the deceased and lady had frequents talks on the mobile.Accordingly, the lady was interrogated by two different teams at length, who was resiling from her version each time, who also deposed that she had cordial relation with the deceased and is no more concerned with the death of Inder, however the same version was contradicted by the various circumstances collected by the police. It turned out that deceased had frequent visits in her house, which resulted in developing relations with her. Of late, the deceased also started having an evil eye on her young daughter, which was the bone of contention. The deceased was warned by the lady and even a quarrel ensued between the duo.Police did lot of ground work in this context. As the probe intensified and the matter was minutely and deeply focused, prima-facie it appeared that the lady (friend of deceased) is dodging Police and was actively involved in the murder of Inder. Reversing back step by step it transpired that on the evening of 06/01/13, Inder was in the house of the lady. Above circumstantial evidences pointed the needle of suspicion towards her and her two associates. Her contradictory statements were exposed and finally she broke down. She confessed to have murdered her friend and packed his body in a suitcase which was dumped in he area of J J Colony, Phase- I, Dwarka, Sec-3. INTERROGATION & CONFESSION Accused lady was subjected to sustained interrogation, who revealed that Inder(deceased) was her friend. He had frequent visits in her house. Of late, he became obsessed with her daughter for which Inder was warned but he did not mend h is way. All means/sources were exhausted by her to save the dignity of her daughter but the deceased did not mend his ways, thus she decided to eliminate him. She took the help of her brother Rakesh Kumar and his associate (friend of Rakesh). As per plan, Inder was called at her house.Tea was offered, which was laced with sleeping pills. When Inder became stupor, she brought knife from kitchen and gave to Rakesh. She caught hold of hands of Inder andhis associate sat on the legs of Inder. Rakesh slit the throat with the knife. After confirming the death of Inder, they bundled the body and wrapped it in a gunny bag, Thereafter it was stuffed in a suitcase. The suitcase was further wrapped in a quilt and same was dumped in the area of J J Colony, Phase- I, Dwarka Sec- 3. First Civilizations began to dissolve, the Second-Wave Empires began to rise and take their place. While the similarities and continuities between the First Civilizations and the Second-Wave Empires are evident, the differences are also very clear. With the fall of the First Civilizations came a second wave of strikingly similar societies when viewed from afar. They were still ruled by monarchs and continued to include classes, caste, and discrimination; Elites were still on top with everyone else far below.The Elites continued to sit back and bathe In the riches while exploiting the peasant farmers and slaves. In the Second-Wave population grew at a much more rapid pace due to the age of agrarian civilizations. The empires also were much larger. These empires and states included the Roman, Persian, Indian, and the Chinese empires. With the larger empires came more diversity however, with more diversity came more tension; resulting in the rising and falling of many of these great empires. With the Second-Wave also came more religion and culture.Confucianism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Greek rationalism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are all examples of the rising religions; they all have provided the structure for the way people live today. Although first civilizations had classes, caste, and slaves, the Second wave amplified the use of classes and slaves. But the largest change between he First-Civilizations and The Second-Wave Empires was rising of a far more intricate communication network allowing for co mmunication between states and empires.Through these two eras there were many changes, fluctuations, and lots of repeating cycles, although they did not hold any fundamental or revolutionary transformations. The major turning points had already occurred at the beginning of the first era with the agricultural revolution.
